To your horror, you see Frankie there, peering from the doorway, looking just as punkish as he had so many years ago. He sneers maliciously.

“Nice to see you again,” he lies.

You realize you’ve made a terrible mistake. You should never have let yourself become distracted once you knew you had found the final piece to your strategy. Sometimes even when people know exactly what to do, they delay out of fear or lack of confidence. And sometimes, like right now, that can be a costly mistake.

You’re about to run back across the lobby, hoping to reach the elevator in time, but you see a strange effect happening to Frankie’s skin, and you’re frozen in fear. Something seems to be bubbling underneath his flesh.

Soon the illusion of Frankie is replaced with the rich black form of a child’s nightmare, and it appears to be some sort of demon. Its thick skin is shiny, like patent leather, but pitted and imperfect too, with signs of age and abuse. The legs are strong and muscular, tapering down toward the feet like overturned wine bottles. But it’s the claws that terrify you more than anything. One swipe from those talons would cut you to ribbons.

The monster smiles at you – a hideous, wrinkled grin.

You never stood a chance.
