The water will save me, you think. Water extinguishes flame.

With thirty-foot high plumes of water and multi-colored lights, the 100-year-old Reutter Park fountain is one of Lansing’s historic gems. Now, you’re counting on it to save your life.

As you race across the park with the dragon pursuing close behind, you realize how exposed you are. Without a building or structure in sight, you’re an easy target until you can make it to the fountain. You notice a few people hiding under benches and behind trees, but you’re confident that your idea is better, even as you feel the dragon right on your heels.

You reach the fountain just in time, hopping the black iron fence in a surge of adrenaline. You take a quick moment to catch your breath, then turn around defiantly to face the creature behind the safety of the water jets.

“You can’t get me now,” you announce proudly. “You’ll have to find another target.”

The dragon cocks its head, and you think you can detect a half-smile before it opens its mouth.

With a single burst, the dragon breathes a stream of fire which instantly boils the water in the fountain—and you within it.

It’s probably best not to put your eggs in one basket, especially when relying on an idea you haven’t had time to think through.
